Planning Your Visit

Hecla Island is approximately a 1 hour and 45-minute drive north of Winnipeg via Highway 8. The drive is paved and scenic, passing through flat prairie farmland before hitting the causeway. You will need a vehicle to get around the island as attractions are spread out over 25 kilometers. A valid Manitoba Provincial Park Pass is mandatory for all vehicles stopping in the park; these can be bought online or at the local office.

Pack for variable weather. Even in summer, the lake breeze can make evenings cool, so bring layers. If you plan on hiking the trails, sturdy footwear is recommended as roots and limestone rocks can be uneven. Essential supplies like gas and major groceries should be purchased in Riverton (20 minutes south) before you cross the bridge, as the General Store on the island has limited stock.
